the Asus IPIBL-LB has the Intel G33, but lists very few of these as compatible. (Mine came with an e2200 but it isn't even listed as compatible) so how do i know what is and isn't compatible?

Are you sure that a Wolfsdale E6600 Pentium Dual Core is not supported?

If you are sure can you tell me why it isn't? Some of the processors you listed are identical in almost every way except clock speed.

The E6600 Pentium Dual Core might be compatible, but I wouldn't want to say conclusively "yes" without testing & there's no way for me to do so. There is another way to know for certain, but you'd have to view the BIOS through a program and see which CPU microcodes are entered into the BIOS. You'd have to use AMIBCP to view the AMI's BIOS to see CPU microcodes entered into the BIOS & then find the CPUs based on the microcodes. This is a search process through google and you'll have to extrapolate a bit. I believe AMIBCP 4.53 is the latest downloadable version.

All of the CPUs listed there come from what I've tested with the Benicia & some are based on what I've viewed by looking at the CPU microcodes to fill in the gaps.

I believe the IPIBL-LB can take some of the Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Chips such as the QX6700, QX6850, but I wouldn't want to push the TDP of the CPU too high...it's an HP OEM Intel G33 Express motherboard, and I think it goes without saying that you don't want a CPU greater than 95W Thermal Design Power (TDP). Along the same line of thought, the Q6600 with Intel sSpec: SL9UM does not work in the Benicia (SL9UM = 105W), but the Q6600 SLACR (SLACR = 95W) does work. This is not an issue though with the IPIBL-LA, which is a previous, older revision of the Benicia -- actually the 2 boards are materially indistinguishable. What separates them? Their respective BIOSes. SL9UM and SLACR both work in the IPIBL-LA (Berkely).

The E6600 Pentium Dual Core is based on the Wolfdale-3M revision, same revision as the E5400, but I can't say yes or no to the E6600 Pentium Dual definitively without trying some of the higher end Pentium Dual Core CPUs. If I had to guess if the E6600 Pentium Dual Core worked with the IPIBL-LB, I'd have to venture to say probably not, but then again, I wouldn't rule it out -- it's certainly possible.

I do know that the E6600 Pentium Dual core works in the HP Asus-Pegatron IPIEL-LA3 (Eureka3)....so do the rest of the Pentium Dual cores such as the E5500, E5700, E5800, E6800...but then again, the Eureka3 is relatively newer (versus the IPIBL-LB) and is an Intel G43 Express chipset HP OEM motherboard that can take up to 8Gb (4x2Gb) DDR3 RAM..etc.

Most of the CPUs that will work are most likely unfortunately tied somewhat to the chipset and of course to the BIOS & the HP Asus - Pegatron IPIBL-LB last BIOS has a BIOS date stamp of 09/10/2009.

The clock speed, front side bus, L2 cache being similar or the same doesn't mean much....the BIOS will dictate which CPUs will work and which ones won't work and this is determined by the CPU microcodes embedded in the HP's AMI 5.43 BIOS. The CPU will either be picked up & recognized or it won't. If it picks up the CPU, goes past the HP Blue Splash screen, gets into Windows, you're probably set and it's a given that CPU's going to work.

If a CPU isn't compatible, you'll get a BIOS beep code at P.O.S.T.: 3 short beeps and 1 long beep -- if you get that BIOS beep code with a CPU installed that indicates there's a "CPU configuration error or CPU type is not compatible" -- well, it's the latter.

No 2 ways about it, you're going to get the best performance from the Benicia with a Core 2 Quad. A Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual core on 2 CPU threads doesn't hold a candle to a Core 2 Quad. Even the Q6600 (4 cores at up to 2.40GHz) SLACR will outperform an E8500 (3.16GHz Wolfdale Dual core) with the Benicia. The CPU score of the Q6600 with the Windows 7 Experience Index is 7.2 out of 7.9. Paired with 8Gb (4x2Gb) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 RAM, you're at 7.2 out of 7.9 for memory calculations per second.

This is with a Windows 7 - 64 Bit operating system of course. Memory will be capped at around 3.5Gb (useable) out of 8Gb (installed) with a 32 Bit OS.

CPU and memory scores dip to a 6.6 out of 7.9 for the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16GHz, 2 cores, 6Mb L2, 1333MHz FSB....memory score for 8Gb DDR2 is tied to the CPU...Memory Calculations per second on the Windows 7 Experience Index will fall to 6.6 out of 7.9 when paired with the E8500. Considering the E8500 is one of the highest end LGA775 CPUs (aside from the E8600)...I see no reason to go with a dual core when Intel's lowest end LGA775 Core 2 Quad Q6600 SLACR outperforms any dual core.

The Pentium Dual core CPUs, even the E6800 @ 3.33GHz, are only mid-range "budget" dual core CPUs at best & won't be setting any records in overall CPU or system performance.

LGA775 Pentium dual core CPUs suffer from the diminutive 2Mb L2 cache. The L2 cache serves in some respect as an interconnect buffer relay between the CPU, RAM, hard drive..etc....a smaller 2Mb L2 cache for the E6600, E6800 Pentium Dual core doesn't bode well, and this is the reason there's more lag when pushing simultaneous multithreaded applications versus even an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.0GHz on 2 cores with a 6Mb L2 cache -- through a Front side bus of 1333MHz.

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 SL9UM version's CPU microcode was somehow mysteriously or inadvertently left out of the Asus - Pegatron IPIBL-LB (Benicia's) BIOS and will give a CPU incompatibility beep code indicating that the CPU is not compatible with the Benicia. This is really a non-issue....but I suppose worth noting -- the SL9UM is less coveted versus the SLACR version anyways. The Intel C2Q Q6600 SL9UM and SLACR both work in the IPIBL-LA.

If a CPU is not supported or is not compatible, you'll either get a CPU incompatibility BIOS beep code, or the HP will boot to the HP Blue Splash screen and never get past the HP Blue Splash screen (caught in an infinite loop while trying to recognize the CPU, yet the BIOS can't pick up the CPU -- so it sticks forever at the HP Splash screen) or you'll get a message at first P.O.S.T. indicating "this CPU is not supported. PC will shut down immediately."

LGA775 CPUs that were first released, first introduced, first manufactured after the IPIBL-LB's last 5.43 AMI BIOS (HP System BIOS Date: 09/10/2009) will probably not register or work in the Benicia.

I know the E6300 Pentium Dual core will work -- the E6500 Pentium Dual core most likely does too as both fall in the August 2009 timeframe.

The ones noted below likely will not be picked up and recognized by the BIOS because they're too new and the microcodes weren't entered into the last, most current HP AMI 5.43 BIOS rollup. Therefore, the Benicia will most likely not know what to do with these processors.

Other than that, it's a stretch. It'll be trial and error whether or not the BIOS and motherboard can utilize the chip.

This type of thing would not be an issue with a custom, retail motherboard in which there are numerous BIOS releases through the manufacturer to support newer CPUs as they come out.
