I have tried a very wide range of drivers and every single one crashes. I tried from like the 270-285 betas and none are crash-free. Is it possible to leave the gpu idle at 800 mhz and not let drop down to 50?

How does one contact you for suggestions for this wonderful site? For a while there it seemed like you were going to help us out organizing information and FAQ's but then you went away.

Some of our suggestions might be of use and therefore welcome!

Once again, thank you for hosting this site. It is so very very useful.

939 pins or 940 pins

I have a older PC HP Compaq SR203WM 32Bit Windows XP PRO. I was going to do a upgrade and give it to my Son. I bought a A8M2N-LA Nodus M3 MB. I put a new AMD Athlon 64 x 2 ADO48001AA5D0 CPU in it. It worked fine, but I took it to a fiend to have a new Hard Drive put in.He did it as a favor, but did not put the Back Panel in. When I took off the Heat Sink the CPU came with it and broke some pins off. I may have just been lucky when I bought the CPU. I can find the Athlon 64 x 2, but with different numbers on the CPU. First, does it matter if the last 2 letters are DD or DO or other letters. Second, is it a 939 Pin or a 940 Pin CPU that I need. Thanks for your help, this is my first try at rebuilding a PC. David

interesting

Posted by: ozlay

well it is an am2 socket motherboard it isnt 939 or 940 it does have 940pins but amd also has a socket that is called 940 so what you need to look for is socket am2 as for the last 2 number it does depending on the cpu

repost the model once you find a replacement if your not shore if it will work and we can tell you if we have tried it or not

CPU

Thanks for the information. The CPU that I bought and did work, was AMD Athlon 64 x 2. The first row of numbers is ADO48001AA5DO. I can find other CPUS that have ADO48001AA5DD. That is the CPU that I wonder if it will work or not. Sometimes I find one listed with the last 2 letters as DO, but the pictures has it DD. I think that I have seen different posts on this site that says any AMD Athlon 64 x2 2 will work. I don't want to buy one unless I know it will work. Thanks, again David

yes

Posted by: ozlay

I think you may have typed that model wrong it should be ADO4800IAA5DD and not ADO48001AA5DD but yes that cpu will work just fine the difference between DO and DD in you case is the DO is a box cpu and the DD is a oem cpu meaning that the DD will not come with a heat sink and the DO will but are both the same cpu

Would it be possible to show unread posts & replies in bold or other highlight so
the user can see which ones they have already viewed? I know this can be handled in
different ways. As it stands now, with the new "reply" button, people are dutifully finding a post and making comments, but these
remarks are lost in the tons of other text already on the board.

I was thinking about adding a button, that will hide all previously viewed comments. I don't know when it will be done. I'm a bit behind my one month update cycle for cpu-upgrade, but I will try to find time to code this feature in the near future. BTW, cpu-upgrade is not the only site I support, and I spend much more time on my another site.

Does anyone here use Linux? Just out of curiosity and boredom, I was playing around in Linux, and I wanted to download GUI version of lshw. After launching the program, I noticed something very interesting; there's a heading that says, capacity: 3700mhz. Which I was able to overclock my cpu to using overclocking program that had been mentioned before. This may be useful for people with proprietary systems.

5.07 Firmware Memory improvement?

2011-12-25 19:52:23
Posted by: Lefly

Because of this thread (thanks!), I was able to track down and update to the 5.07 BIOS on my ol' NODUSM3 motherboard by unzipping the HP update file. For those who were curious, the WinFlash software runs fine under Windows 7, as does the updated firmware. Upon first reboot, however, it had to reload the drivers for various components.

I had already upgraded the processor to a Brisbane-core Athlon64x2 5000+, which was already recognized under previous firmware-- but was looking at some point to bump it up further.

Here's something no one has mentioned: it appears that the firmware improves memory performance. I have 2x2GB of DDR2-800 sticks on the board. Previously, under the 3.10 firmware, the Windows Experience Index score for memory was 6.6. Afterwards it went to 7.0. Not a great benchmarking tool, granted, but one that everyone has built-in.

Has anyone else experienced this?

server cpu as desktop cpu?

2012-01-05 02:51:40
Posted by: jesus

Is this possible to load up normal windows 7 64 bit or does it have to be like windows server like 2008. And how this compare to high end desktop cpus like intel 990x and some 3960k or something like that (Can't remember right cpu name), which are faster? Use the new opteron 6282 se as an example. How is this cpu will be able to handle games? I know I'm in fairy land but I just curious. Those 16 cores are not for decorations. I want to see some butt-kicking. :P

for gaming

2012-01-05 14:36:10
Posted by: ozlay

you want to have a higher clock speed for gaming and server cpus dont really have all that high of a clock speed and cant be overclocked so you will get a much better gaming performance with a desktop cpu and as for desktops cpus intel 6 cores like the 990x and the 3960k are a waste of money yes they are faster at stock speed but as far as gaming goes an intel 2600k and 2500k are faster and can be overclocked to 5 ghz which would make them fastest cpu you get and as for amd an 1100t is the fastest cpu you can get unless your using a server os like server 2008 then bulldozer 8core will be faster but win7 cant use the bulldozers 8cores and will only use 6core of it so for win7 a 100t is faster

AMD Athlon 64 X2 7550 2.5 GHz Socket AM2+ 2MB Cache OEM Processor

what about this, will this work? Maybe not as am I right in saying the AM2+ will not work with this motherboard as it requires AM2???

I have 4 memory slots, but HP say I can only put 4GB in (4X1GB). I currently have 2GB and have just ordered another 1GB, so will have 3GB RAM. My hardrive is randomly choosing not to boot up when I push the power button,....only starts up 1 in 10 times or so, just hear a glitch and then nothing happens.

Concerning the above processor I put at the beginning...is this a good one ro should I try to find a better one. If someone could point me in the right direction perhaps a link on ebay or something??
cheers for your help already!

also, do I need one with 939 pins, or 940??
cheers

no

2012-01-22 14:37:56
Posted by: ozlay

am2+ cpus will not work with this board it needs to have an am2 cpu it does have 940pins but don't get it confused with the socket 940 as this motherboard only works with am2 cpus also as for memory this board supports 8 gigs hp say 4 gigs because there where no 2gig sticks at the time the board was released so you can put 2gig sticks in if needed and it sounds like your power supply is bad thats why its not booting all the time best to replace before it does any damage a 400 to 500 watt replacement will work just fine as long as its 24pin

power supply?

2012-01-22 20:01:00
Posted by: Ben

I am not sure it is the power supply, as every time I turn it on the fan runs and the light on the front and back comes on, and I hear the hard drive try to kick in then fail. But then 1 in 10 times the hard drive will actually kick in and everything will load up ok, do you think it is the hard drive? Seems that the hard drive is having trouble getting going??

well

2012-01-23 20:17:24
Posted by: ozlay

if its the stock power supply i would recomend upgrading it anyways as that brand tends to die and take the board with them when they do and if you think its not a power supply issue unplug the hard drives power cable and try turning on the system a few time to see if it is the problem it could still be the power supply not being able to give the correct amount of power to the hard drive so test and see if the system will still post with out the hard drive being plugged in

Hi Guys,
i have the HP t3738.de with the ASUS A8M2N-LA and i want to upgrade my old computer.
So i read a bit here and made this summary:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ non-BE
4x2GB DDR2-1066 (PC2-8500)

ist this correct?
Should work after i upgrade my BIOS to v5.07

the Mainboard should also use the full 1066mhz of my ram?

well

2012-01-24 14:02:11
Posted by: ozlay

the board will take 1066 but it will not run at that speed the max the board will take and run at correct speed would be be 4x2GB DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) the gskill F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ and F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B have bin tested by a few of us and work and i highly recommend gskill memory as they are the best also the v5.07 bios disables onboard video when updated so you will need a pcie video card to use the 5.07 bios before updating

Last of hp computer

Posted by: Marge

Saw this thread was still going. It sure helped me a lot in the past. I had upgraded the cpu to the 6000+ and then had to change out the hp motherboard when it started dying to the asus M4A785-M as suggested by Ozlay. Had been going good for a couple years then the computer kept crashing when playing any games or streaming video. Decided heat in that little hp case was a real problem. So have moved the motherboard over to an Antec 300 and installed an amd phenom II 960t be which unlocked to a 1605t with all cores working using coolermater hyper 212 plus instead of stock. It did solve my problems and have no more crashes. The only thing left from the original hp computer is the hard drive which I use for storage. This thread helped me along the way. Eventually I will have to upgrade the motherboard but it's still working so no rush. Wondering if anyone needs a 6000+. Thought about listing it on ebay but is such a pain. Also can anyone suggest a site that shows how to overclock for dummies. Everything I have done so far is by watching step by step videos lol.

hmm

2012-01-26 21:52:48
Posted by: ozlay

well step by step videos are the best way to go there arnt really any websites that show you how to overclock mostly just show you how to overclock only one type of cpu so it best just just look for a video or a tutorial on how to overclock your model of cpu

I could use a 6000+ but dont no how you want to do that

Yeah I've been reading the forum for a while and I read that part about the on board graphics card going out. I'm glad mine didn't go out after the update. I was wondering what's the best thing I can do to this comp to make it even better? I didn't start learning about these types of things until I got this old comp repaired for 60 buckd two weeks ago :D. It's working great so far with a few mishaps that I searched up and fixed. well the nodusm3 has 4 ram slots? and supports a max of 2gigs per slot and a max of 8gigs all together now win7 64bit will run fine on your current ram setup but is recommended to have 4 gigs or more depending on what your using the system for

I recommend gskill if you want to upgrade your ram newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122 can be mixed with current ram

And I just want my computer to have the latest version it can run and fastest it can go. I researched some and one person said the 9800gt is a good graphics card to run on this machine. What do you guys think? Anything better around 65 bucks or less?? And smooth installion?

64bit

2012-02-14 22:44:05
Posted by: ozlay

you need 64bit to run more then 4gigs of ram and you will want 64bit it is alot faster then 32bit also the 9800gt is a good card unless you need directx 11 then an ati 6670 will be a good alternative

max ram is 2gb per slot the board can hand 4 or 8 gigs depending on the amount of slots your board has as for fastest cpu the am2 6000+ and 6400+ are the max and fastest cpus this board can handle as long as your bios in updated to 3.10 or 5.07

the only 6400+ cpus that work are the ones that are listed at top of page all 6000+ cpuz should work

hey i just added 4 more GB of ram so now i have 6 all together. and my 4 slots are full... i thought the 32 bit system wouldn't recognize more than 4 GB ram.. My system does.. is my system going to be stable?? lol

yes

2012-02-17 21:16:55
Posted by: ozlay

it will see all of it but it will not use more then 4gigs and sometimes it will say "6 gigs of ram 4gigs usable" you can however turn on 36-bit PAE extensions which would also enable the os too see all the ram but your still limited to 4gigs that maybe why its saying its using all 6gig when it really isnt unless you have programs set to use the extra 2 gigs such as ram drives and such

well i have and used the windows 7 upgrade advisor and it displays only 3.4 GB ram.. so as soon as i upgrade to the windows 7 64 bit ill be able to use the full 6 GB.. right? that sounds right

yes

2012-02-18 08:54:24
Posted by: ozlay

once you upgrade to 64bit you will be able to use all 6gigs of ram but not only that 64bit can access twice the amount of ram that 32bit can during each calculation which doubles the speed in which the computer can operate 64bit tasks

depends mostly on which one you like best win7 is faster then xp but xp is better for older programs and games i use win 7 64bit and xp 64bit on these boards and both work very well i also use linux which is faster then both

BIOS 3.0

Posted by: Skyfallkavu

The only spare graphics card I have doesn't work in my NAOS board for some reason, so im just going to remain at BIOS 3.0. I run a small server out of this so I was wonder if I could get a confirmation on the highest processor I can buy that will be recognised by my original BIOS. Any help? I know the original post says 5000+, but I just wanna confirm. Thanks

yes

2012-02-19 15:17:06
Posted by: ozlay

the 5000+ is the max i think but you can update the bios on the NAOS board to the 3.10 bios which will support the 6000+ and 6400+ with out loosing the video the only downside is it will read as unknown cpu type but it will run at full speed and will work fine it just want say what the cpu is in the bios

also i think it needs to be a windser cpu and not a brisbane i dont think bios 3.0 supports brisbane cpus only the 3.10 5.04 and 5.07 support brisbane cpus but am not completely sure

It worked!

you only ruin the video on the NODUS board with the 3.10 bios and you ruin the onboard video with the NAOS board with the 5.07 bios becuse the use 2 different onboard video cards there bios are interchangeable but you loose the onboard video in doing so

also with the 3.10 bios there is a secret bios with added features such as fan speed control you can access it by using the f10 key instead of the default f1 key

there is 5.07 for your board but it is not needed it does add a few more features but not really anything you will need

5.04 and 5.07

you can also enter a secret bios by pressing ctrl+f11 instead of the default f1 key it will open up a bios with add features such as fan speed control

no

there are no overclocking features in the bios but you can use a program called nvidia system tools which will let you overclock in the OS not recommended for overclcoking ram but it works ok for cpu overclocking

My issues like many of the other on here is the Mobo doesn't recognize it and lists it as an "Amd cpu model not recognized". My situation is that there have been many posts about upgrading to the 5.07? bios version but no links or places to go to get the update. Can someone please post a link to it? I have the 3.10 ver and I am hoping that this will also give me back the use of my usb ports.

Can I update my bios (current version 3.07) to 5.07 with sp35159.exe if I have windows 7 32bit? It says it's only for Vista... Has anyone tried?

yes

2012-02-29 15:26:13
Posted by: ozlay

you need to download 7-zip and extract the sp35159.exe to a folder then open the folder up and you will see a winflash.exe you want to run that do not run the hp installer
once you open the winflash you want to click file save old bios then give your old bios a name and then click save after that you want to go to file update bios and the it will ask to chose the rom file you want to click the 5.07 rom from the folder you just extracted and click open then click update if it asks you too it will then freze your system during the update so you cant interact during the update do not turn your computer off for any reason once it has finished it will ask you to restart

if for any reason it fails during the update process redo the process and if it fails again then chose the backup rom you created and update to that instead

you can get 7-zip here sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/files/7-Zip/9.20/7z920.exe/download

for all your help. I have been lurking here for a couple days now. You know, just reading and learning. A while back, this guy gave me a HP Pavillion A1600N. I think his kids messed it up, and he got tired of looking at it and gave it to me (for free). I guess it usta have XP Media Center on it, then, they tried to upgrade to Vista, and then when that didn't work, they tried to go back to XP. So, in the process's chewed up the O/S pretty bad. While I was looking for a quick fix, I stumbled into this forum, and liked what I read. So now I am back and planning some upgrades.

Right now, it's pretty much stock, with a fresh XP Professional on it, and it is stable. I have ordered:

One AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3 GHz AM2 Dual Core ADA6000IAA6CZ 89W CPU.

One pair of Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5C, XMS2 dual channel, 4gig (2x 2048mb) memory PC2-6400 (DDR2-800). I am still looking for another pair to go with this set.

I have downloaded both bios's 3.10 and 5.07, My eyes are telling me to use the 5.07, but my gut is telling me to use the 3.10, I guess I need to re-read your instructions.

Future plans for this box is to eventually have an internal, Ceton InfiniTV 4 Digital Cable Quad-tuner Card PCIe.

well by the looks of what you posted it looks like you have the nodus board with 4 memory slots and 4 sata if that is correct then the 5.07 bios will work just fine without lossing onboard video so upgradeing too the 5.07 bios would be your best choice but the 3.10 will also work just fine

Yes, Nodus A8M2N-LA

4 Sata, 4 memory slots. I will use the 5.07 then, the added bonus is that I won't lose the onboard video, that will be nice while I shop around for a video card to go with the Ceton quad tv tuner. I have this old TV Wonder installed right now in XP Pro. Using Nero 7 as the server. The workstations are using Nero 7 Showtime as the client. It works ok. Do you think I will notice any improvements to my tv streaming network with this upgrade?

yeah

2012-03-26 22:51:01

the 5.07 bios seems to make the sata rate a bit faster also the added memory should make your system a little faster when streaming over a network also a gigabit router will make the picture quality better in some cases if you dont already have one

Yes, I will

have to start looking for a new router, and learn how to terminate Cat 5 for Gigabit speed. Any concerns with using the stock heatsink on the 6000+ 89 watt? Does that Arctic paste really make a difference?

the arctic paste makes a huge difference over the stock paste in some cases it drops themps by 10° but seeing as you have the 89w version of the cpu you temps may not be that high too begin with but cooler better

I have one little kink to work out before the upgrade. Goes to sleep, won't wake up, mouse and keyboard are here today and gone tomorrow. I looked into: administrative tools/computer management/system tools/event viewer/system. The error reported is: Disk error "11" The driver has detected a controller or cable error. Looking through the event log history, this error has been popping up daily since re-birth. This must be the the cause of the kink mentioned above. Thinking back now, this was one of the reasons the guy gave it away to begin with. Is this a common error with the A8M2N?

sounds like your sata cable is bad or not pluged in correctly try flipping the cable around or replace or pluging into another sata port doesn't normally happen unless the sata cable is bad but mabe just dusty and not seated correctly

2012-03-28 22:10:12

the ram (4GB) and CPU (6000+) this afternoon. The hardware went in very smoothly. My first attempt to install the 5.07 bios ended with some errors about my computer being unsuitable or something like that. I re-read your post suggesting 7-zip. I played a hunch that winrar could do the same thing, and it did. Likely any zip program can extract the 5.07 bios from sp35159.exe My second attempt at the 5.07 bios went without a hitch. Some new features have appeared in the bios.

I was using Novabench, to track improvements throughout the upgrades today. I started out with a stock machine that had a score of 267. 4 GB of 800 mhz ram upped my score to 286. The 6000+ 89watt CPU increased the score to 352. The new bios (5.07) has given this box a crisper "feel", time will tell for sure, but I think the 5.07 might have corrected my intermittent mouse/keyboard problem. I did not loose the onboard video when I upgraded the bios to 5.07.

I ordered the ZOTAC ZT-40605-10L, That is exactly what I was looking for to go with the PCIe Ceton TV Tuner. Thank-you for the help! You (or others) have mentioned some NVIDIA software, used to squeeze a few more MHZ out of the hardware, would you recomend that I do that now or wait until after Win7 64 bit?

yes

2012-03-29 13:57:32
Posted by: ozlay

nvidia system tools will let you overclock the system but i dont recommend it with the stock hp case it tends too run a little on the warm side when overclocking and is not really needed i use it mostly to tighten ram timings

Tighten the ram

2012-03-30 09:52:47
Posted by: Crash2009

Yes, I read a bit about that when I first got here. I just reviewed my notes. You suggest using Ntune to adjust the ram timing. My notes say to set to 5-4-3-10 Currently, I have one pair of CM2X2048-6400C5C's installed, there is another pair on the way here.

Installed 64X7 (Win7) last night, Novabench reports a 7 point increase. This box started out at 267, now it's up to 361. The speed is incredible.

Can anything be done to make the CPU "known" instead of unknown?

I had never used Ntune. I thought the digits 5-4-3-10 had to be entered manually, like the old bios's. hehe. I installed Ntune and am running the 3 hour fine tuning exersise right now. I feel like I just moved to the city from Green Acres! Man, you put this computer stuff down for a couple years, and you get behind real quick.

it's a pretty nice card. Has a little weight to it. Nvidia GForce GT 430. On my system the supplied drivers (ver 280.26) didn't work very well. Windows update drivers (ver 285.62) were not much better. I scraped them off and installed (ver 296.10) The 6150 LE works great with this driver. The only peculiarity is loosing the Realtek (analog ?)sound built in to the ABM2N-LA. It appears to me, that when the sound drivers load, if, a moniter is attached to the VGA, the realtek sound is killed, and the NVidia HD sound is re-directed through the DVI or HDMI. If neither of these ports have an audio capeble monitor connected, you loose the Realtek sound and the driver will fail to load if I am trying to use both VGA ports (6150 LE and GT 430) My only HDMI monitor/TV is bolted to the wall in the L-room so further testing will have to be done after I get the box off the workbench. I still have the 300 watt power supply installed. I guess its time for a bigger power supply. How many watts would you recomend?

i use a antec brand power supply most systems dont need more then 4 or 500 watts you should be fine with a 400watt i use newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016 its Modular and it helps with airflow when you dont use as many cables

3.10 bios?

Posted by: Crash2009

The power supply is installed, I ended up with a Rosewill 650. Newegg is a great place to shop! Prices are reasonable, and fast delivery. Very professional company. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Got a bios question for ya. Would I be any better off with the 3.10 bios? When you are adjusting the bios settings for the video card in the 3.10 bios, what choices do you get? pcie/pci, pcie/nothing, is the onboard feature completely gone? Will I be able to shut off SHADOWING?

The quad TV card is installed now(PCIE), and the Zotac GT 430(PCI) and the onboard 6150 LE(ONBOARD) I had to set the bios to USE PCIe AS THE PRIMARY. My only PCIe is the TV tuner. If I set to anything else all hell breaks loose. I am getting a few display issues such as: When I mouse-over the start button or any of the items in the sys tray, it appears that magnifyer kicks in for a moment, the icon gets zoomed for a second or 2, then goes black and there is nothing there, then comes back normal after I move the mouse somewhere else. Some days I just get a little degradation on the side of the icon, other days everything is perfect.

To me, it looks like, a hardware accelleration problem ON STERIODS.

I am using Nvidia 15.49 for the motherboard and Nvidia 296.10 for the GT 430/6150 LE

the amd 990 chipsets supports sli and crossfire so your best choice would be too go with a 990 chipset motherboard which will support the 955 which there are no micro atx board so you will need a case that supports it as the hp case does not your best choice at the moment is the gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 or the GA-990FXA-UD5 which should support second generation bulldozer chips once they arrive

I have a HP Pavilion a1600n computer with the ASUS A8M2N-LA. Naturally I was lead here because I am looking to upgrade the processor. After reading through here some, I think I am going to attempt to upgrade to a ADX6000IAA6CZ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Socket AM2 Windsor. From what I have read, it seems like the Windsor's are the most likely to work and this is one of the highest processors I could upgrade to with the correct socket, even though it doesnt appear supported by HP. I just wanted to verify that I am making a good decision in this upgrade (I am using the stock 3800+). It seems like some of you have had success with this exact setup and I figured it would work best for me.

In summary, my questions are:
Is this a good choice of processor to upgrade to?
I am planning on installing Windows 7, should I use 64x bit or 32x bit?
Can anyone confirm that 5.07 is still the most current BIOS update? (looks like it to me)
Are there any special caveats that will apply due to my processor or OS selection?

Computer Specs:
HP Pavilion a1600n
Athlon 64 X2 (W) 3800+ 2.0 GHz
A8M2N-LA NodusM3-GL8E
4 gig DDR2 SDRAM*
Geforce 9600 GT*
(everything else is stock)

The 6000+ windsor will be a good choice along with the win7 64bit the 5.07 bios is the latest and greatest the 6000+ along side win7 will make the system more responsive and faster

6000 vs 6400

Just wanted to say that I will never regret going for the 6400...it needs some extra cooling, but it as fast and in most cases faster than my 945 3Ghz quad core. Love it.
Just 2 cent worth before you buy.
Best, Rick

Thanks to Ozlay for pointing this chip out to me in the first place. Have been running it for 8 months and could not be more pleased. And I am running it with a very modest video card. (I don't game, but bet I could if push came to shove.) It is a very fast cpu.
Does everything I want and more.

ps. NO, I don't sell them, lol

Win7 Ultimate 64bit

Yea, thanks to this forum and Oslay. I did the 6000 thing a few weeks ago. I used Win7 64bit. I expected results but was surprised by how much faster 64 bit is. My numbers from Novabench tell the whole story. The HP1600 was no slouch before, I was using XP 32bit and Nero7 to stream TV around my network. XP 32bit got the job done, Win7 64bit does it effortlessly

I almost forgot to tell ya. When you install Win7 there is no more F6 for the Sata drivers. Download Nvidia for 64bit and unzip to CD or USB before you start installing Win7

my friend wants me to upgrade his old celeron d but i dont know his frequency. would it be a noticeable difference putting in a 3ghz pentium 4 northwood? his mobo is an ms-6577 (ver:4.1) maybe adding a bit of few of ram. from 1 to 2 gb. will he be able to notice? i only know about amd products not intel...

some

there will be a differce the 3ghz northwood is faster and has a larger cache then the celron and will see better performace but not by much so it will be a good upgrade if you can find the cpu for a good price

:P

Xp 64bit...

Can anyone confirm That on an :A8M2N-LA nodusm3 running win xp 64 bit you can run an AMD x2 6400+ and it recognize 8gb of ram? Or even 16 gb?

cpu

Posted by: jesus

yes it will run just fine. right clocks and everything but the bios will detect it as unknown processor but works fine in the os. for ram, if your board has 4 slots it support 8gb, if it has 2, only 4gb. im not entirely sure about the ram but positive about the cpu. oh yeah i almost forgot. you need to be in 3.10 bios to show "unkown processor" and 5.07 for correct recognition.

I thought 5.07 was only, for vista and higher? I can use 5.07 on xp 64 bit? Also it is a NodusM3-GL8E it has 4 memory slots. I was thinking of attempting win 7 ultimate 64 bit and running 16gb ram (4x4gb) PC2-6400 and seeing if it registered all 16gb.

5.07

you can extract the hp installer and run the winflash installer inside of it and that will bypass the non vista system warning and let you flash it with win xp as for the 4x4gb no one has done it yet it could work but not yet tested best to give it a try recommend using the 5.07 bios

As it turns out, my board is no good. (I think) I pulled it out of the case, hoping for a short. This board is just plain squirelly. Keyboard, mouse and display problems. Corsair looked at the ram, NVidia looked at the display, Ceton looked at the TV card. Everything else checked out OK. All I got hooked up is the board, CPU, and ram. This board is just plain crazy.

Any suggestions for a different board that I can use the 6000+ 89 watt and the 8 gigs of Corsair 6400C5C 800mhz?

The biostar fits the hp case. the asrock (I think better board) is ATX or whatever.

Both work for me just fine. Check ozlay on this.

Thanks for the suggestion Rick

Both of those boards look pretty nice. I am sure you are having fun with them. I didn't realize that AM2, AM2+, AND AM3 are the same socket. Last couple days I have been looking hard at the Asus M3A78-PRO. Its been hard to find so far. The Asus M3A78-EM is easier to find but it has some negativity attached.

K9A2 is gorgeous. All the heatsinks are tied together like my laptop. Pricy though.

Found a brand new M4A78-PRO. Should be here in a week. M4 was easier to find than the M3, plus 16gb ram is supported. The M4 probably does a bunch more tricks than the M3?

Fired up an old D915GAG to play with while waiting for parts. Even though the CPU turned the board into a bowl, it still runs OK.

Case and Cooling Upgrade

Assuming that I will eventually upgrade the M4A78-PRO to Sempron or Pheonom, and likely jack up the ram at the same time, I thought I should consider a better heatsink/cooling option now. I all ready figured out that I will have to use a different case, and I have one in stock. The case is 8 inches thick and supports the 9 motherboard screws required by the M4A78-PRO.

I like the looks of the ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-B 135mm, or the CNPS9500A-LED 92mm. Any suggestions regarding these two or others would be appreciated.

well

i normal use a noctua or a zalman i think the ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-B is your best choice with some good thermal paste

i also run a Antec Kuhler H2O 620 closed water loop which works really good with the 6000+

Just about ready for round 2

I am going to try out the Antec H20. I ordered some Arctic Silver as well. I got a new hard drive for this build, I forget the brand, but it's a 2TB. Any suggestions on what size of partitions (if any) I should have. I would assume 200GB for the OS and the remainder for storage?

Hope this board is gonna like being a network TV. M4A78 PRO, 6000+ AMD, 8GB CORSAIR 6400, CETON INFINI4TV

also turn off the page file unless your running older programs that need it

If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any.

Seagate Barracuda 2 TB. Seatools for Dos Ver 2.23 gave it the death sentence with test code EC0EC954. Repaired a page full of bad sectors, short test passed. Ran long again and got another page full of bad sectors. Drive was clicking and clunking. Newegg sent me an RMA # within seconds.

I like the board you recomended. The Antec 620 H2O cooler is pretty sweet. AMD 6000+ idles at 27 Celcius. Thanks to Arctic Silver, I finally learned hot to put the paste on correctly. Can't wait to crank it up and try to boil the water in the radiator.

slocket for slot 1?

2012-05-07 02:34:09
Posted by: jesus

Sorry for bringing these random intel questions but I have a vb-609 slot 1 motherboard. I was wondering if you can use a slocket to put a p3 1ghz but the problem is that the cpu is 133fbs and the 440bx chipset of the mobo only supports up to 100. The slocket does have a 133 fbs option so I don't know if it will work.

hmm

2012-05-07 10:34:03
Posted by: ozlay

probably would be better to use a 100mhz fsb cpu for that board if it dont support 133fsb but some of the slot 1 133fsb cpus will down clock to 100 mhz which means if it does support the cpu it will only run it at 750mhz

awesome

so i got my slocket today and poped in the pentium 3 and since my slocket came before my heatsink, i was too curious to wait until tuesday so i used an unused am2 heatsink and toothpaste :P as thermal paste and i was holding it in place. it did post but the bios doesn't detect the cpu but that is what least matters. it read "i(unknown processor) 133mhz" well it does detect the fbs and the only thing to check if it is stable. i did like 2 minuted into the windows xp installation then turned the system off because i do not want to damage the cpu due to heat. so it hasn't crashed which is good. just wait for the heatsink to give it a go.

still problem?

when i try to install windows vista or 7, it tells me an error that my bios is not acpi compatible. this bios is from 1996 :) i did some research and discovered first bios with acpi were released on december 1996. chances are my bios doesnt have it. really sick. but you know whats funny? i see people with pentium 1s running windows 7 and i am like -_-. is there a workaround? like the ram :) i only had 192 and with the editing of the winsetup.dll file i passed that but now im stuck at the dumb acpi. this computer is for my little sister since she doesnt game or anything she only uses it for facebook which a pentium 3 1ghz should be fine. this motherboard is the cheapest solution instead of buying a whole new computer.

hmm

well you cant use win 7 with out acpi you can use xp with out acpi or a linux os but windows 7 and vista can not run with out an acpi bio also without acpi the os cant shutoff the pc and will prompt you to turn off the pc during the shutdown process so it looks like you will be stuck with xp unless theres an updated bios that can fix it

wow

2012-05-08 23:15:33
Posted by: jesus

acpi, from what ive heard, is used better for laptops and those type of computers. why would you need it for a desktop if i can care less if it uses more energy and raise the bill? i did not notice any cost incrase since i upgraded my 5000+ to phenom 955 and radeon hd 4830 to gtx 460. how lame. and desktop dont use batteries so its useless.

hmm

when i said the cpu runs 133mhz, it is really running 133mhz not saying that is the fsb. when i change the jumper to 66mhz on the slocket, it goes to 500mhz. this is very weird.

yeah

2012-05-10 01:47:49
Posted by: ozlay

you need to change the multiplier probably try setting it to 6 or 7 if there is that option

2012-05-12 13:04:07
Posted by: jesus

there is not voltage jumpers. only frquency. when i put it at 133mhz, the cpu clock is 133mhz. when i put the slocket at 100mhz, the cou clock is still 133mhz. when i put it at 66mhz, the cpu clock goes to 500mhz. i have a super slocket 3. it would be great to make this cpu work. it takes like an hour for this machine at 133mhz to boot into xp. really. no kidding.

hmm

2012-05-16 16:54:05
Posted by: ozlay

what type of ram are you using? and if your running at 66mhz fsb and you get a clock speed of about 500mhz then you must have a 7.5x multiplier i think the super slocket 3 has jumpers on it to control the multiplier make sure that is is set to the same as the motherboards multiplier whichs could be 7.5x also i think pc66 memory will limit the fsb to 66mhz so check to make sure your not using pc66

You stated that your sister main use for the desktop will be for Internet browsing which will include Facebook. Is your sister tech-savvy? Windows XP is so outdated and highly insecure. Perhaps she would be better off with a Linux box. You know, something user-friendly such as; Ubuntu.

Also, does the BIOS hold in settings regarding the multiplier and or bus speed?

nope it only shows "i(unknow processor) 133mhz"

6000+ and the some

So thanks to all on this thread and Ozlay in particular, here's what I did today:

Started with stock Compaq SR5080AN

First let's make sure the PSU can handle upgrades:
Upgraded stock 300W PSU to Antec 450W ATX NEO 450C ECO PSU.

Upgraded the 4200+ to a 6000+, no problems at all, indentified straight away (BIOS 5.07).

Upgraded Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS to GeForce GT 440.

Upgraded 250GB HDD to 250GB SDD OCZ Petrol.

Running Windows 7 32 bit (don't have the energy to do a clean install to get 64 bit).

Not a single drama with any of the above. Of course the stock 2GB 533mhz RAM is holding it back but I've got plans for that in the next few days.

A new machine that didn't cost much!

Where did you pick up your SSD? I've been looking for one that's fairly priced with decent size, 120-250GB. An SSD will be a welcome component for a new build.
